When using apps like Nightscout Nightguard, it is very helpful to allow background updates for these type of apps.

To do so, you first have to enable background updates for the phone part of your app. So open “settings | general | background updates”. Take care that background updates are enabled for that app:

This should entitle your phone part of your app to get updates when your phone screen is off.

Now let’s get to the watch part. Open the “watch” app on your phone. Go to “settings | general | background updates”. Do the same there for your app you wish to be enabled:

As a result, you should now get updates e.g. to your app watch complications. But keep in mind that apple only allows a certain amount of background updates per day. Normally, that should be about 4 updates an hour.
